Best Essential Oils for Hair

Essential oils are all-natural product, purely extracted and distilled from plant, fruits, flowers, leaves & other parts of plants. Essential oil is called “essential” as they carry the pure “essence”, scent & flavour of the plant, they are derived from. The characteristic essence is created by densely packed aromatic compounds.

Therefore, they are free of harmful chemicals, safer to use & good for our environment too. There are various types of essential oil which have various benefits, they can stimulate hair growth, nourishes hair, treat dandruff and dry scalp, give shine and strengthen hair.


1)Rosemary essential oil-

Rosemary essential oil can be a conventional treatment against balding, if used for at least six to eight months. It stimulates hair follicles, hair growth. Thus, prevents premature baldness.

Rosemary essential oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to stimulate the roots, improves hair growth and increases circulation in the scalp.

Rosemary oil is good for all types of scalp, helps to treat both dry, dull hair as well as oily hair. It also minimizes and cures itchiness of scalp, lice, split ends & dandruff.

2)Cedarwood essential oil-

Cedarwood essential oil increases blood circulation to the scalp, treats thinning of hair, improves hair growth and stimulates hair follicles in the scalp. It also has antibacterial properties that can treat dandruff and itchy scalp.

This essential oil is best for oily hair as it balance the oil producing glands in the scalp.

Cedarwood oil can be applied to the scalp & hair, mixing well with rosemary, lavender essential oils and carrier oils like coconut or, olive oil. Then massage it for 10-15 minutes and leave it overnight or, for 3-4 hours before washing it out.

3)Peppermint essential oil-

Peppermint essential oil has healing properties and is good for both dry and greasy hair. Peppermint has a pleasant cooling sensation when applied to the scalp, as the blood flow increases to the areas applied.

It has calming effects to reduce skin inflammation. It also cleanses the clogged follicles and dandruff. Studies found that usage of peppermint oil for 4 weeks showed overall hair growth, increases number of follicles, strengthens hair.

Add 2-3 drops of peppermint oil to jojoba or, almond carrier oil and massage deeply into the scalp. Leave it for 2-3 hours & wash it out.


4)Lavender essential oil-

Lavender essential oil deep conditions the hair, keeps it shiny and helps to control dandruff.

Lavender oil is a natural healing oil that said to promote hair growth as well as improve blood circulation in scalp. It helps to balance the oils in scalp, treats itching scalp & dryness.

Emotional stress can cause thinning of hair, lavender oil can be used to create a stress-free environment.

Add 5-6 drops of lavender essential oil into carrier oils like olive oil, coconut oil. Apply & massage it for 15 minutes. Then, leave it overnight, wash it out in the next day.

5)Tea tree essential oil-

Tea tree oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, & antiseptic properties. It is successfully used to treat dandruff, itchiness and greasiness. It helps to unclog hair follicles by the removing dead cells and promote new hair growth.

Mix 3 drops of tea tree oil with carrier oil & massage it gently in the scalp. After 2 hours rinse it out.

6)Ylang ylang essential oil-

 Ylang ylang oil is ideal for those with dry scalp, as it stimulates sebum production. Those people who have oily hair can skip this.

Hair become dry & brittle due to lack of oil and sebum. Ylang ylang oil improve hair texture & reduce hair breakage.

Add 2-3 drops of ylang ylang oil to hot coconut oil for a deep hair conditioner, massage it and wrap a slightly wet towel on head. Leave it for some time & wash it out.

7)Chamomile essential oil-

Chamomile oil enhances the shine & softness of hair, soothes the scalp. This gentle & calming essential oil is best used for hair fall due to stress or, anxiety.

On other hand, chamomile essential oil can also be used to lighten the hair naturally. Mix 5 drops of chamomile oil with 1/3 cup of baking soda and a tablespoon of sea salt. Making it a paste & apply this mixture to hair. Then leave it for half an hour before rinsing it out. By choosing this alternative we are not exposed to unhealthy hair dyeing products like formaldehyde & bleach.
